New Technology for Detecting Zombie PC

The new technology that automatically detects zombie PC through an e-mail has been invented. If the technology is used  it is expected to prevent spam mails up to 30%.

KISA(Korea Internet & Security Agency) announced that it has invented the technology that automatically analizes the feature of e-mail header information and find IP of sender.

In other words, by analizing header information which is needed for sending or receiving e-mail, it detects the PC which is remote-controlled.

A lot of portal sites including DAUM are interested in this new technology.

KISA said it can find the PC that send spam mail without knowing.

It dected 392 in Korea and 14,570 zombie PC in other countries when it is used with connection to RBL(Reamtime Blacklist), one of the spam block system that KISA owns.

Do you remember that I stronly recommended to install mobile vaccine app in your smart phone?
But you need to watch out fake mobile vaccine app called "Phone Keeper".
It is first made by KISA(Korea Internet & Security Agency) for the purpose of keeping your phone from viruses. However, KISA found that fake "phone keer" is spreading through text message, seeming to recommend to install phone keeper by KISA.

If you click the URL link, the app that has a malignant module from a foreign server. KISA immediately blocked the server. One of the representatives of KISA said that there are a lot of text message recommending to install security app but you do not click them.

Free Vaccine for PC(3)

Today's post is about "Microsoft Security Essentials", the free vaccine.

As you can see on the picture, it is made by Microsoft which is compatible with Windows very well even Windows 8 compared to other vaccines. In order to install MSE, you need to use genuine Windows OS or you cannot use it.

It is optimized for Windows 32bit and 64bit, so it is quite lite program. Although it has fast speed of installation and quick search for viruses, searching for all files for viruses is too slow. But it is not big deal as you can do other works while it is searching for viruses.

On Default actions, you can choose the action after viruses are caught according to different levels. For example, you can set to delete  the file automatically if the virus is severe alert level.

If you want to scan for specific files or folders, use right mouse button.

Types of virus(2)

A few weeks ago, I posted the types of virus by stages of development. Today, I will introduce the types of virus in accordance with a subject of infection.

1. Boot Virus
When we start our PC,  programs in the boot sector are implemented first. The boot virus is the virus that influences computer booting. The "brain virus" and "michelangelo virus" are boot virus. When the virus is infected in the boot sector, computers might not be able to boot or cannot read disks. Also the disk loading time would be delayed and overall speed of computer becomes slow.

2. File Virus
Most computer virus is file virus applying for over 90% of all virus. The infected files are COM and EXE. Also it is divied according to the type of file, location, and principle of implementation.

(I) Parasitic Virus: It usually does not destroy the original files but it parasitizes front or back of the program. It is hard to find the virus because it doesn't influence the implement of program.

(II) Overwriting Virus: It is similar to the parasitic virus but it destory the program. Therefore it is hard to recover the destoryed programs.

(III) Spawning Virus: It doesn't infect other EXE files but it makes COM files that have same name with EXE files. When COM and EXE exist in the same folder, the COM files  are implemented first so virus would be activated.

(IV) Linking Virus: It doesn't infect programs directly but it changes the start position of programs to virus files. If your program is infected, you cannot run the program or it takes a lot of time to run it. Also the size of files could be risin or date of the file could be changed.


3. Boot/File Virus
It infects not only boot sectors but also files.

It is the picture of Tequila, one of the boot/file viruses.

McAfee arrested in Guatemala

The founder of "MaAfee", John McAfee who was running in charge of murder was arrested in Guatemala not becuase of murder but illegal entry.

He ran away after the investigation of his neighbor's murder. He said that he came to Guatemala because he didn't get the protection from the government of Belize and he is going to ask for political asylum.

However, the government of Guatemala is  planning to banish him to Belize. The police of Belize said that McAfee is a suspect not a criminal.

John McAfess kept posting on his blog saying that whoever catches the murderer he will give him or her $25,000.

How to prevent your computer from virus?

As you know, it is hard to live without computer these days. However, there is not only a good side but also bad side of IT world and that is because of spyware and virus.

A few years ago, the damage of virus infection were slow speed or malfunction. But today the virus took your personal information and used your computer as sources of DNS attack.

According to Korea Internet & Security Agency, the number of registered users was the highest on June, 2012. And the purpose of spyware was mostly steal of computer game ID(809), followed by the purpose of DNS attack(209). It was reported that the spyware made fake log-in page and stole the information.

So, today I am going to tell you how to prevent your computer from virus and spyware.

1. Do not depend your vaccine too much.
I can't agree more that vaccine programs are importnat and necessary. However, these days, so many viruses appear almost every minute, so the vaccine programs are not a panacea. You need to think them as a minimal defensive measurement. So, please undate your programs often so that they can follow the leastest patch.

2. Update security patches for your OS and other related program.
I strongly recommend number 1 and 2 because in my personal experiecne, those two methods are good and easy ways to provent your computer. So I suggest turning on an auto Windows update setting.

3. Do not download the attached files from your e-mail or other web pages..
If you have to open the attached files, check with your vaccine programs before open them.

4. Do not click unknown link or URL at your social networking services.
You can be infected by virus or spyware just clicking link or URL.

5. Do not use illegal games or programs.
Some people download gaems and programs for free from P2P sites or web-hard. But there would be spyware and virus in those files and if you use P2P site, your secuirty level becomes vulnerable.

And here are some tips for proventing your mobile phone from virus.

1. Regular update of vaccine app and examine your phone.

2. Do not change the OS systems.
For Android people often do rooting(Jailbreak for Iphone) but it makes your phone vulnerable for virus.

3. Do not use suspicous services.
Try not to open suspicous attached files, SNS message or URL.

New computer virus "Stuxnet"

The Korea government is preparing measures for the new virus called "Stuxnet" which attacks the traffic lights systems and waterworks.

The "Stuxnet" is a computer virus that destroys and paralyses the atomic power plants, oil pipeline and other factory facilities.

Those who developed Stuxnet have long known of the vulnerabilities of industrial control system, aspect which the whole world has become aware only after the event.

This type of attacks is usually moved over a long period of months under coverage to avoid that the malware’s activity is noticed. We need to improve forensics techiniques to identify the threats and eradicate it.

Online virus follows the trend from PC to Smart phone

As ccnsumption of smart phone is growing, the rate of infected phone is increasing while the rate of computer virus infection is decreasing. So most experts suggest installing anti-virus apps.

Accodring to a survey conducted in China, 67.43% of smart phone users have an experience of virus infection. The routes of infection were web surfing(51.91%), text message(41.67) and some are infected by connecting with computer.

The symptoms were personal data spill, more bill, remote control, zombie phone and some malfunctions of phone.

The information spill was mostly contact numbers, location, history of surfing and business contacts.

Fortunately more and more people install vaccine apps becasue people start recognizing the danger of phone virus.

Does smart phone have virus?

The answer is "Yes". Smart phone, these days, becomes more complicated than before. So far, there was few damage because of few routes of virus. However, your phone can be infected through free or illegally downloaded apps and e-mail. A few years ago, a free app called Wallpaper made by Jackeey Wallpaper turned out to be a spyware. The app stole your phone number, e-mail address, search history and text messages and sent them to the china server. One of the anti-virus companies in US analyized about 300,000 apps and 14% of Iphone and 10% of Android respectively collected users' information without permission.

Most smart phone users do not recognize the danger of the virus and not even try to install anti-virus apps. But if you use bank-related apps a lot, it is recommended to install anti-virus apps.

A few days ago, there was a news that founder of McAfee company John McAfee was arrested in charge of murder. As some of you know, it is the one of the most well-known computer vaccine companies in the world. A couple of years ago, I used it and it was quite good. Although the McAfee vaccine was not free, a lot of people have used it for its performance. However, he ended up with being arrested for the murder.

In Korea there is a well-known vaccine company too, called "Ahn Lab" The founder of Ahn Lab is famous for "free vaccine provider for PC" even though his job was a doctor.
